References to Eptakomi in historical maps and documents. |
|
Several of these chapels can be seen
on published maps and can be interpreted as references
to the village just as much as the single village name
of Eptakomi. The Eptakomi chapel locations broadly fall
into two categories – firstly those that lie close to
the sea on flat land of the coastal terrace that lies
north of the Kyrenia mountain ridge and secondly those
that sit in a very different location, south of the
mountain ridge on elevated sloping land that faces to
the south coast of the Karpas. This is the location of
the modern village.
The Eptakomi chapels and churches are:
-
Ayios Georgios (small church within the village,
dating from 1900)
-
Ayios Loukas (the main church in the village centre,
dating from 1951
-
Ayios Archangelos (small chapel 1 mile north east of
the village centre)
-
Ayia Agathi (small chapel 0.5 mile west of the village
centre)
-
Unnamed_1 (ruined site near the north sea coast)
-
Ayios Epiphanios (ruined site near the north sea
coast)
-
Ayios Loukas (ruined building, some part walls remain)
-
Ayia Eirini (0.5 mile south west of the village
centre)

1573. "Cypri
Insulae Nova Descript."
Abraham Ortelius
The Venetian occupation of Cyprus gave rise to a
larger number of place names appearing on charts
and maps. However, it was only in 1573 that a
first map by the Dutchman Abraham Ortelius shows
many of the village or chapel place names
adjacent to Eptakomi. Early map makers did not
necessarily visit all |

the places they charted and
often acquired their knowledge from other second hand
sources. On this map the positioning of places was not
accurate by modern geographical standards but the
following sites can be clearly recognised and are
highlighted in red on the inset portion of the map. |
